There is absolutely no shortage of local girls tennis talent playing in the Fox Valley Conference this season.
Dundee-Crown certainly falls in that category. The Chargers were 13-5 overall and 6-3 in FVC play to start the week.
'We're real strong at the top of our lineup and our other teams have been working real hard and have come through with some key wins,' said D-C coach Janet Malecek.
D-C's No. 1 doubles team of Kim Miller and Maria Ballester were 26-4 to start the week.
'They are doing really well,' said Malecek. 'They have played some good competition in the conference. Kim has been in that number one doubles position for four years. She played two years with her sister (Kelly) and one year with Siri Nelson (now playing at Aurora University). They both have excellent skills and the chemistry between Kim and Maria makes for a good doubles team.'
Both Stephanie Zundl (No. 1 singles) and Alejandra Ballester (No. 2 singles) came into the week with 15 wins. D-C's No. 2 doubles team of Lindsey Drotos and Stephanie Domagalski had 12 wins.
Jacobs: D-C's District 300 neighbor Jacobs was 9-3 overall to start the week and 5-2 in FVC action.
The Golden Eagles are fueled by a veteran singles lineup that has been together for the past 3 years. Seniors Annie Smith (No. 1 singles) and Marlena Aleksiejczyk (No. 3 singles) and junior Jen Ruther (No. 2 singles) have all played in the state tournament. Ruther was 17-1 to start the week. Aleksiejczyk was 15-2 and Smith was 15-3.
'We've had this singles lineup for the third year now. All of them are playing excellent,' said Jacobs coach Jon Betts. 'They all have finished at the top of the conference and they've been to state. We're looking for them do well at conference and at sectionals. Every match we go into we expect them to pick up points for us and we count on our doubles teams to play tough and put us over the top.'
Betts has also been pleased with the play of the No. 1 doubles combo of juniors Heather Graham and Kellie Stoka, who had 10 wins to start the week. The duo won the Elk Grove invitational and finished second at the Dundee-Crown invitational.
'They have really done a great job. Both of them have stepped up in the lineup,' said Betts. 'They have been asked to play some very tough teams this year, especially in our conference.'

Prairie Ridge: Many point to Prairie Ridge as a team that could make noise at the state level this season.
The Wolves were 14-1 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the FVC to begin the week. Prairie Ridge is in search of its fourth straight conference title. The team has also won invitationals at Geneva, Hersey, Crystal Lake Central and Fremd.
Prairie Ridge's lone blemish has been a 5-2 nonconference loss to a Barrington team that finished sixth in the state last year.

The Wolves have been bolstered by outstanding freshmen Allison Murphy and Carolyn Huerth. Murphy was 13-4 at No. 1 singles, while Huerth was a perfect 17-0 to start the week.
Prairie Ridge's No. 1 doubles team of Jackie and Julie Schwartz was 17-0 as well, while the No. 2 doubles team of Emily Murphy and Laura Curran was 15-0 to start the week.
'This is the best group I have had, for sure,' said Prairie Ridge coach Jessica Fetzner. 'We have a strong top of the lineup and a lot of depth on the team. We're well-rounded.'
The Wolves are also quite youthful. The lineup features 3 seniors, 4 juniors, 2 sophomores and 2 freshmen.

'We've got a nice mix of classes,' said Fetzner. 'We're well-rounded. I had heard the two freshmen coming in had a lot of talent. I had no idea they were as talented as they are. It's really been exciting watching them play.'
Crystal Lake South: Crystal Lake South has been enjoying a strong season. The Gators were 8-1 overall and 7-1 in FVC play to begin the week. South also won the Schaumburg and Rockford invitationals and took third at Fremd.
'It's been kind of a balanced effort,' said South coach Don Nead. 'A lot of girls have been contributing.'
Returning state qualifier Jenny Maruyama was 10-4 at No. 1 singles to start the week. Her only losses were to freshmen standouts Allison Murphy (Prairie Ridge), Nellie Youel (Crystal Lake Central), Johnsburg's Margaret Fox and Fremd's Jenna Langhorst. Fox and Langhorst are both returning state qualifiers. Langhorst advanced to the consolation quarterfinals a year ago. Fox was a doubles state qualifier last year.
Freshman Abbey Kolarczyk was 13-5 at No. 2 singles for the Gators, while Stephanie Brunetti was 13-2. The South No. 2 doubles team of Amy Ross and Kaitlin Voss were 14-4, while the No. 1 doubles team of Liana Semchuk and Laura Roesslein was 12-6 to start the week.
'We've had a balanced attack,' said Nead. 'I knew we would be fairly deep. It kind of played out that we had some nice depth. We don't have a great fall from our first singles to our forth doubles. We've got a nice team all the way through and that has kept us in most matches.'
Cary-Grove: The Trojans started the week 12-8 overall (3-5 FVC), but had 3 tough losses in that ledger (3-2 to Hononegah, 4-3 to Jacobs and 4-3 to Dundee-Crown).
The doubles teams of Amanda Listak and Megan Resseguie and Rachel Kuchta and Meghan Wleklinski were both 18-6 to start the week. Cary-Grove's top doubles combo of Susanne Johnson and Courtney Koepke were a combined 18-6, which factors in both the duo's doubles and singles records.
Johnson and Koepke sometimes occupy the team's top 2 singles positions.
'It depends on the situation,' said Cary-Grove coach Bud Lachel. 'In certain cases, we will go with a strong doubles lineup and try and win all 4 doubles matches.'
Huntley: The Red Raiders had victories in 3 of their last 4 matches to start the week.
'The girls are coming together at the end of the year. We've really started to do better,' said Huntley coach Barry Wells.
Huntley took fifth at the recent Lakes invitational in Lake Villa.
'We've really been playing better the last couple of weeks,' said Wells. 'We were very happy with how we did at Lakes.'
Heather Niemann, Huntley's No. 2 singles player, took third at the Lakes event.
The team has also benefited from the strong play of the No. 1 doubles team of Kathleen Chalas and Stephanie Koerner and the No. 2 team of Lydia Jiang and Holly Dryden. Jiang and Dryden are both freshmen.
'It's difficult being a freshman on the varsity,' said Wells. 'But they are doing very well. They are very competitive.'
Bartlett: Bartlett's No. 1 doubles team of Krystle Velasco and Arianne Alvarez have been playing together for most of the last 4 years.
'They are playing quite well together,' said Bartlett coach Gloria Apfel. 'They have played a lot of tough competition this season.'
Apfel has also been pleased with the efforts of the No. 2 doubles team of Erica Pang and Lindsey Garnett, along with singles players Danielle Dinglasan (No. 2 singles) and Joanna Ligas (No. 1 singles).
'We've been seeing improvements throughout the season,' said Apfel.
Elgin: Veteran coach Larry DeHaan has seen his team endure the old roller coaster season.
Elgin was 7-4 through late last week, but dropped 4 matches at the Cary-Grove invitational and stood at 7-8 at the start of the week.
'We've had a mixed season,' said DeHaan. 'We've seen some real good things and we've taken some hits here and there. We'll see if they can recover and finish strong. We've got some good kids here who I know can make it through it.'
The Maroons have been led by the likes of No. 1 singles player Rebekah Hegel and the No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Hegel and Dana Altieri -- all three veterans of the Elgin program. The No. 2 doubles team of Claire and Margaret Hernon has also played well.

Elgin Academy: The Hilltoppers had 2 victories to start the week and had their sights set on at least equaling last year's total of 5 triumphs -- which was the modern-day school record.
'We're doing fine,' said Academy coach Greg Repede, who lauded the help of assistant/volunteer coaches Jon Kaufman (daughter, Jennifer, plays No. 2 singles), Mike Heisley (daughter, Mary, plays on the JV) and longtime Academy teacher and former tennis coach Fred Fletcher.
'We're having a lot of fun. The girls are really improving. It's been remarkable going from year to year and seeing the improvement we've made. A lot of hard work has gone into this. We've got a grear group to work with.'
The Hilltoppers are paced by 3-time state qualifier Bethany Boyle (3-2 at state last year). She was 5-5 to start the week.

'Bethany's record is deceptive,' said Repede. 'We have a lot of tough singles players in the conference. Most teams in the conference, the player at that position has a national or state ranking.'
Elgin Academy has also been bolstered by the doubles combos of Marysia Watson-Taylor Yavari (No. 2), Sarah Parker-Talia Beechick (No. 3) and Naha and Henna Khemani. Naha is a freshman, while Henna is a senior.
Postseason: Area teams are spread out between three different sectionals this year. Larkin will host a sectional that includes Jacobs, Dundee-Crown, Elgin Academy, Elgin, St. Edward, Huntley, South Elgin and Streamwood. Cary-Grove will host a sectional that also features Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake South. Bartlett will play in the St. Charles East sectional.
